INTERVIEW: Swisstrax garage floor tiles in Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage

After Jay Leno's Swisstrax installation, we were lucky to catch the President of Swisstrax, Randy Nelson, for a brief interview. We were curious about who did the installation, what Jay purchased, when the job was completed, where Jay decided to use Swisstrax tiles, and why the job was an important milestone for Swisstrax, Inc.

ANNA: Who did the installation at Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage?
RANDY: The installation was done by Swisstrax Corp. Part of the installation was done by my three children to demonstrate the ease of installing Swisstrax modular floor tiles. Jay loved seeing the children demonstrate the installation. He saw how easy the products went down.

ANNA: Which Swisstrax floor tile product did Jay Leno purchase for the Big Dog Garage floor?
RANDY: Ribtrax tiles in Slate Grey and Pearl Silver. He chose the parking pattern which just looks fantastic. Big Dog Garage also went for a few pads for specific cars. The people and BD Garage are thrilled and Jay Leno loved it. We also included some flooring in their workshop around the machines. Ribtrax Anti-Fatigue was especially appreciated by the workers around the larger equipment that requires constant standing and surveillance. A floor was also laid around the clean up area with Non-Slip Tiles and Anti-Fatigue tiles combined.

ANNA: What did Jay Leno say when he met you and saw the Swisstrax plastic floor tile product?
RANDY: Can these plastic floor tiles handle the weight of some of my vehicles weighing in over 6,000 lbs.? A piece of plastic? We laid a few sample floors and rolled up a few of the classic Duesenbergs in his collection. Not a creak! Now that’s a floor!

ANNA: What do you plan to do to ensure Jay Leno is a Swisstrax satisfied customer for life?
RANDY: Let the product do the talking. Our best image is the quality of the products we supply. Swisstrax modular floor tiles are Swiss Engineered and Made in the USA.

ANNA: When did Swisstrax do this job?
RANDY: I first saw an article in GARAGE STYLE MAGAZINE with a picture of the shop floor. I said, “That can’t be… such a beautiful collection on such a floor!" Then, I went out and met with the people at Leno’s garage. The first person I met was another SWISS! Mr. Bernard Juchli, and the rest is history. I speak fluent Swiss, German, and French, hit it off with Bernard, and he was kind enough to give Swisstrax a chance.

ANNA: Where is Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage?
RANDY: Burbank, California. The whole team at Big Dog Garage are really great people. Jay is so knowledgeable on his whole collection and Bernard, George, Jim, Per and the others build those cars from the ground up and turn them into what is seen as one of the finest collections around. The most impressive point is that Jay drives all these vehicles as well as the over 80 motorcycles he has! Jay Leno’s collection of Duesenbergs is one of his prides and this is where Swisstrax has been installed. We also have flooring under his collection of Bugatti’s as well.

ANNA: Why is this job important to Swisstrax?
RANDY: Many competitors have been at this for years and yet Swisstrax was chosen over and above all other tile suppliers and any type of paint or epoxy coatings. This is huge. We know we have the best product on the market, but to get Jay’s seal of approval is yet another confirmation of our strategy to become the best modular tile in the world.
